Leaving behind the shackles of my personal Twitter account, which these days mostly serves as my daily newspaper, I have launched the Shaun Digital Twitter account. Out of sheer curiosity I used this rare ‘new account’ status to experiment a little and send the default suggested Tweet of “Just setting up my Twitter. #myfirstTweet”
Just setting up my Twitter. #myfirstTweet

Almost predictably this hashtag gains interaction, but rather users rushing to welcome me with open arms it is merely ‘liked’ without a follow up by an account with 41k followers, which makes the cynic in me suggest that most of these are from those new to Twitter looking to make their first friends after being approached in such a manner. One can’t help but wonder how much this tactic works in the long term, granted with so many followers there must be some overlap with the native audience but is the effort worth the reward? I would imagine not.
Cynicism to one side, Shaun Digital is now on Twitter. If you’re so inclined to hear my thoughts on various marketing and technology related matters you know where to find me.
